About the Course

This lecture introduces the scientific foundations of strength training and its application to health, fitness, and athletic performance. Participants will explore the principles of specificity, progressive overload, variation, individuality, and reversibility, as well as the key training variables that determine program effectiveness.

The lecture also covers strength assessment, exercise selection and order, training frequency, intensity, repetition ranges, rest intervals, and the adjustment of training variables according to different training goals such as maximal strength, hypertrophy, muscular endurance, and power.

By the end of the lecture, participants will understand how to design safe, effective, and evidence-based strength training programs for individuals with different needs and performance levels.

Learning Outcomes By the end of this lecture, participants will be able to:

  • Define muscular strength and distinguish between its primary training goals.
  • Explain the fundamental principles of strength training and their practical applications.
  • Differentiate between acute and chronic adaptations to resistance training.
  • Apply the SAID principle and progressive overload to optimize training outcomes.
  • Identify and manipulate the main training variables, including exercise selection, intensity, frequency, repetition range, and recovery.
  • Select appropriate exercises based on movement patterns, training objectives, and individual characteristics.
  • Organize exercises in an effective sequence within a resistance training session.
  • Assess maximal strength using direct and estimated 1RM methods.
  • Adjust training variables to develop maximal strength, muscular hypertrophy, muscular endurance, and power.
  • Design evidence-based strength training programs that are individualized, safe, and goal-oriented.
